The Quarterstaff has been the traditional weapon and constant companion of the European peasant for centuries. We too have been entranced by its simplicity and utility as a hiking staff and its effectiveness as a weapon, so we decided to make our own version.
Our Quarterstaff is 6ft long by 1.25" thick and precision turned from premium quarter sawn white ash. Ash, as you may know, is a tough, hard wood which, when quarter sawn so the grain runs in the same direction (no cross grain), is very resistant to breaking- even under extreme impact forces. To add to our Quarterstaff's durability, we have equipped each one with a thick, brass-washed steel ferrule to protect it from chipping, cracking, or undue wear when traversing rough or broken ground.
Quartersawn Milling Techniques
The
Quartersawn milling technique involves cutting a log with a pronounced bias
towards its radius. This method ultimately yields a stick blank with a virtually
straight grain pattern.
