Typically referred to as “Escrima sticks,” these impact weapons
have a distinct history in Filipino culture. Due to the Spanish imposition of martial law in the Philippines, escrima sticks surfaced as a primary weapon. Martial training along with folk performance symbolically used sticks as swords for various events and activities. The use of the sticks was eventually acclimated by the northern and central martial communities, which in turn created various new techniques based around the characteristics of the
stick.
